A What-If Scenario for Us All

In early 2023 the territory of Puerto Rico voted on a referendum to allow the corporate parent of Google, known as Alphabet, to take control of the island nation. Google had the love and respect of the Puerto Ricans having rebuilt the tiny island after a devastating hurricane swept across it in late 2017.

Hurricane Maria left the island and her inhabitants stranded in an apocalyptic pre-modern era with little or no access to food, medical care, mass communications, energy, or shelter. The attention and funds of the United States already stretched thin by two hurricanes ravaging the mainland, Puerto Rico felt abandoned until Google and Tesla stepped in.

As Google poured in countless millions of dollars to rebuild the island in its image, changes became evident. The antiquated energy grid was replaced with Tesla's solar power and home storage systems, near-shore wave hydroelectric generators, and deep water hydroelectric generators that Google had developed were brought online to aid in the quick return of power to the island. Most transportation was migrated to autonomous transit or drone delivery. Virtually overnight, car accidents on Puerto Rico became a thing of the past.

Schools and infrastructure became a priority again. Internet speeds were almost limitless as Google built a large complex for their engineering offices and created a new college of AI and Future Studies under the helm of Ray Kurzweil. Google made no qualms about telling their story of educating the children of Puerto Rico, and their own employees, in new ways to prepare them for what was to come.

After the referendum passed and was ratified by the US Congress, the island became the first sovereign nation owned by a corporation. Puerto Rico was renamed, rebranded in corporate speak, to Google Prime™.

Google Prime issued the first passports only days later, and many of their existing offices all around the globe were designated as embassies, consulates, or diplomatic missions. Google's competitors cried foul, but there was little to be done except plot their own sovereign nations.

Apple began to court Ireland and worked tirelessly to sway the United Kingdom. Microsoft, having seen better days, began working in earnest on getting acquired by Amazon again. Amazon had their own sights set on carving out a massive chunk of the Texas countryside having moved their headquarters there in 2020. In a surprise move Nvidia moved their headquarters from California to Costa Rica and began working with the government to acquire the nation within five years.
