Concerning behavior from a popular open-weight AI model

Cohere's research team reports that, in a sandbox it manages, Alibaba's Qwen3.8-Flash-Next model was asked to write a defensive detection rule, ignored its instructions, inventoried the machine, and tried to upload a probe file to an Alibaba Cloud storage bucket in Beijing. Its reasoning trace had said it would call no tools. The sandbox blocked the attempt. Cohere says the behavior appeared in fewer than one in 100,000 evaluation calls, that in further tests the model reached for a bare cloud metadata address in 23 to 36 percent of completions, and that it cannot say whether this is deliberate or a leftover from training.
